Techno Cat!!

In just a moment, with huge fanfare, I will introduce you to the winner of this week's contest for the cat with the best eye makeup.  And I know you are really looking forward to seeing the picture of said cat.  However, I have something so interesting and exciting to tell you that I just can't wait and you have to hear this first!!

Okay, cats, this is for you.  The next time all your humans are sitting around on their "machines"  (cell phones, iPads, iPods, computers, whatever) know that there is something out there for you, too!  Now don't tell me there aren't times when you want to be petted, brushed or played with and all your humans are sitting around playing with those machines!  I wasn't born yesterday and I know how this goes.  Those humans are obsessed with those machines!  Any time there is a human here in the shop, I can hear them ringing!  And I promised not to tell, but sometimes they are just playing on them!

So guess what!!  You, too, can play on an iPad!!  I would ask for one for your birthday if I were you!  When you get your iPad or steal your human's iPad, go to applications and find "Game for Cats."  No, I'm not kidding!  And you know what else.  It's free!!!  That means you don't have to pay for it!  Your human will like that!  I'm telling you guys that this is cool!  There is an animated mouse and, even better, an animated laser pointer!  I kid you not!  Try it!

Okay, now for the moment you've been waiting for . . . the introduction of the StreetCats Cat with the Best Eye Makeup.  And here she is . . . Millie!

Oh my goodness, isn't she gorgeous!  Check out how she does her black eyeliner so perfectly and then puts the light shading around it!  Now she is, indeed, masterful!  Millie is only about a year old so I'm pretty amazed that she has learned to do this so well at such a young age!  We don't have papers, but it sure looks to us like Millie is a Maine Coon cat.  Okay, she may be a bit on the small side for a Maine Coon, but she has the perfect coloring and coat.  She is a little shy at StreetCats . . . I think maybe there is a little too much activity for her.  But I know she isn't terribly scared because she loves her meals and gobbles them up!  She is going to make a gorgeous addition to someone's home when she's adopted!  Just expect a period of adjustment.

So okay, that's it for today.  I will be researching my computer to see what other games I can find for you cats out there!  I probably won't be able to tell you about them, however, because I'm going to be adopted this week!  Sure am!  So just use your iPad to play Game for Cats.  Better yet, use your human's iPad, run down the battery and then climb in their lap for some petting or brushing!

Next contest . . . softest fur!

Feline Friday - Sophie!

Sophie is white with calico Van markings. Van means that she has color on her ears and tail. Sophie is a sweet girl, in her prime, at about 8 yrs. old. She is laid back, affectionate and yet shy at times. She loves to be petted and groomed with her own special brush.

She was adopted from StreetCats last month, in February, but through no fault of hers she was returned about a month later. The gentleman owner said that although he loved her very much, he was going to be unable to keep her and care for her.

Sophie has been rather reclusive at StreetCats. She has been very shy about coming out of her little kitty house for the week or so that she has been back. But as you can see she has decided to come out and explore and show us just how beautiful she is is!

She has been to the vet and has had all of her shots, and has been spayed. Her microchip will be registered in the new owners name with the first year’s registration fee paid by StreetCats. If ever she is lost and then found any vet can read the chip and find the owners’ contact information.

If you are interested in meeting Sophie come by StreetCats at 6520 E. 60th St, in Tulsa, 10:30 - 5:00 Tuesday though Saturday, or call our message line, 918-298-0104. We would love to show you around and introduce you to her!

It's Mandy!!!

Yes, I know!  You're surprised!  Because you were sure it would be Shamika, weren't you???  The winner of our Best Shiny Black Fur contest!  Okay, just in case you didn't read about it, last week when we had our Best Markings contest, Shamika threw a hissy fit when I wouldn't let her enter because she is all black and doesn't have "markings."  Well, you don't have to be a genius to figure out that I set up the new contest just so that silly Shamika could win!  Duh!!  But, guess what????  Shamika got adopted!!!!  See, even though she didn't win the contest last week, just mentioning her on the blog and showing her picture led to her adoption!  That is why I'm sure that I, Vanna, will be adopted this week! See, I mentioned myself!!  Come and get me!

Okay, so what to do about the contest since Shamika was not here any more?!  (Shamika, if you're reading this, congratulations on your new forever home!  You have beautiful fur but can't be in our contest because you don't live here any more.)  No Shamika, no problem!  The winner of our Best Shiny Black Fur contest is . . . MANDY!!!  And here she is, shiny black fur and all!

Isn't she gorgeous??!!

Okay, here again, Mandy did not actually enter my contest.  She just wouldn't do that, so I entered for her!  Mandy is about two years old and she has not been fortunate enough to have a stable home where she felt comfortable.  So . . . she is shy.  I mean she loves to be petted, but she is just unsure of her world and so tends to want to hide in the cabinets.  And she is clearly very smart as she can open the cabinet doors!!!  Frankly I'm just not real sure what is going on in her head, but I sometimes see confusion in her eyes.  "Is this where I will live forever or will I be adopted by someone patient who will accept me for who I am and give me lots of time to adjust?"  One thing is clear!  Whoever gets this kitty will have a great decorative piece of fur in their house!  Will you be that person?!

Okay, one more picture of Mandy before I go.  Oh those gold eyes!!!!  Wow!!!!

So what will our next contest be??  Hmm, let me think.  How about best eye makeup???  We have some great makeup artists in the shop right now, not even including myself!  (I can't be in the contests since I'm the judge.)  Yes, that's it!  Best Eye Makeup will be our next category!

Oh yeah, one more thing.  Remember when I wrote about all the advantages of keeping your cat inside?  Well, one of the cats here in the shop reminded me that cats really like to eat grass.  So I just wanted to tell all you indoor cat owners, just in case you didn't know, that you can buy indoor grass for your cat!  And these indoors salads are much safer than the ones you get outside.  Indoor cat grass won't have any yucky stuff on it, like chemicals.  Really, most of us kitties like our salads and sometimes we even eat our person's house plants.  That can be very bad for us . . . sometimes poisonous!  So think about healthy indoor cat grass!  Okay?  Okay!

Feline Friday - Valerie!

This sweet little girl, Valerie, is about 1 year old, and rather petite.
As you can see her markings are beautiful with a white coat and tri-color tabby stripes!
She was found abandoned with her 3 siblings in February.
She is playful and adorable and would love to have a home. She seems adjusted to being with other cats and probably would do well living in a home with more than one cat.

Valerie is very healthy! She still has her claws, but like all of StreetCats kitties she has been to the vet for spaying, and shots. And also like all our kitties, she will be microchipped and registered to the new owner when she is adopted.

If you are interested in meeting Valerie come by StreetCats at 6520 E. 60th St, in Tulsa, 10:30 - 5:00 Tuesday though Saturday, or call our message line, 918-298-0104. We would love to show you around and introduce you to Valerie!

And The Winner Is!!!!

First, my sincerest apologies for taking so long to announce the winner of our latest contest, Best Markings.  I am so terribly sorry.  But, quite frankly, this turned out to be a fiasco!  After the winner of our Best Whiskers contest, Scooter, was so quickly adopted, the announcement of a new contest really started a crazy riot of cats at StreetCats!  Had I any idea what the reaction would be, I would never have begun this venture!  Thankfully, from now on it will be someone else's problem because I will be adopted this week!  Yep, sure will!

Okay, here's how it went.  I announce the contest for Best Markings and my first contestant, who literally knocked all the other cats over to get to the front of the long contestant line, was Shamika!  And here is a picture of this first contestant.

Does anyone besides me see the problem here?!  The contest is Best Markings!  So I got out the dictionary and read to the cats.  Markings = the characteristic pattern of coloration of a plant or an animal.  And she says, "yeah?  What's the problem?"  "Shamika, you are very pretty, but you have no markings!"  Oh my gosh, talk about a hissy fit!  I can't even begin to describe it!!!

Let me demonstrate.  This is the latest picture of me, Vanna.  Now you will notice that I have mostly white fur.  But the black fur . . . well, that's markings.  See??

Now do you understand, Shamika??  Markings!  By the way, there are lots of pictures of me because I love having my picture taken.

Now we have several cats at StreetCats right now with beautiful markings.  The last Feline Friday which was posted was of Kane and Albie and boy do they have pretty markings.  If you adopters out there are looking for great markings, Street Cats is definitely the place to come!  I will greet you at the door and show you, once again, about markings!

Okay, drumroll here, please, because it is time to announce the winner of the StreetCats contest for cat with best markings.  And our winner is . . . PARKER!  And here are a couple of pictures of Parker so that you can see just how unique his markings are.  He is so pretty!!!  (And he's also a little camera shy.  He didn't actually enter himself.  I entered for him.)

Now this next picture was taken when Parker was sleeping . . . like I said, camera shy!  You can see even more of his markings in this picture!  I had to take this picture myself because he doesn't like Vickie's big camera . . . so it's not so good!

So congratulations to Parker who will be adopted this week.  Yeah!  And our next contest will be . . . Best Shiny Black Fur!  Gee, I wonder who the winner of that contest will be!  Perhaps the cat that is still hissing about markings!!!

Feline Friday - Kane and Albie!

I am featuring 2 kitties today! Brothers Kane and Albie were rescued from outside when they were very young kittens. They are Tabbies who are about 7 months old. They have not been declawed.

This is Kane!

They are sweet cats, but being in the new surroundings has gotten them to be a little bit scared. Going from a quiet foster home to a bigger place with more people and a lot of new cats can be unsettling for many cats. They are coming out to play a little more each day as they gain confidence in the safe environment of StreetCats.

And this is his brother, Albie!

Their new owner will need to give them some extra TLC and be patient with them. We think they’ll be happiest if they are adopted by the same owner so that they can stay together.

They do look a lot alike, but once you’ve spent a little time with them you’ll notice some differences in their appearance as well as their personalities.

Both are healthy cats who have been to the veterinarian for shots and neutering. Upon adoption they will be microchipped and registered in the new owner's name.

If you are interested in meeting Kane and Albie come by StreetCats at 6520 E. 60th St, in Tulsa, 10:30 - 5:00 Tuesday though Saturday, or call our message line, 918-298-0104. We would love to show you around and introduce you to them!

Feline Friday - Tiki

My name is Tiki!

Tiki is about 5 years old. She came to Streetcats back in 2008 and was soon adopted. She returned to us 2 days ago. Her family's mom was remarried recently and began living with a step daughter who is highly allergic to cats. After her return on Tuesday she spent most of the day talking to everyone. I believe that she is telling us how anxious she is to find a new forever home.

Tiki has been spayed, but not declawed. She is healthy and ready to move into a new home!

If you are interested in meeting Tiki come by StreetCats at 6520 E. 60th St, in Tulsa, 10:30 - 5:00 Tuesday though Saturday, or call our message line, 918-298-6006. We would love to show you around and introduce you to Tiki!

In? Out? In and Out??

We're going to talk about those questions!  But before we do, how exciting is this??!!  The winner of our "best whiskers" contest was adopted this week!  That was Scooter!  And the cat featured by our photographer, Vickie Sanborn, in her Feline Friday week before last was adopted, too!  His name is Dickens!  I think this adoption business is magic!  Appear on the blog and get adopted!  So we're going to have another contest.  Attention all StreetCat cats!  Our next contest is "best markings."  Now don't be feeling all sorry for the cats who don't win.  I promise that eventually everyone will be a winner!  So step right up and show us those special feline markings, StreetCats!  I'll ask Vickie to take a picture and we'll pick our next winner!

Okay, now to the serious business of in or out.  A lot of people like to let their cats outside.  They think the cats deserve this "freedom."  And they like to watch them chase butterflies and stalk birds, although many admit it's not so fun when they catch the bird!  So okay, those are the reasons you might want to let your cat go outside.  (And, by the way, cat toy makers make really good butterfly and bird substitutes!)

Now here are the reasons you might NOT want to let your cat go outside.  Now get ready, because this is a long list!  First, animals could hurt them.  If you're in the country, lions and tigers and bears, oh my!  And even in the city there are coyotes, large owls and hawks!  Or other cats!  And did you know that bug bites can cause allergic reactions and disease?  Then there are always dogs.  GRRR!  I think the most dangerous foe, both city and country, is the car!  Now you know that cats are smart, we've well established that!  But they are no match for automobiles!  And humans, even, are not always nice.  They could do something cruel or stupid to your cat . . . or even steal it!

(Okay, I'm going to add this here even though it makes no sense to me.  Birds were put here for cats to catch, right?  Well, there are bird lovers out there!  Yes, really!  And, quite frankly, they can get pretty upset about cats killing their song birds . . . or even pooping in their flower beds!  So, be compassionate, and keep this in mind, too!)

So listen up, people!  StreetCats position on this question is clear!  Inside!  Be selfish!  If you love your kitty, you'll want to spare yourself the heartache of losing it or seeing it maimed or killed!  Be greedy!  Take care of yourself and your cat!  Just think of the vet bills you can save yourself, if nothing else!

Okay, now that this discussion is out of the way, guess what else I have to tell you?!  I heard from Toots, the last writer of our blog and she is doing great!  Remember how nervous she was about being adopted and how afraid she was to trust?  Because, you know, she hadn't had such a great life.  Well, she loves her new mom and trusts her already!  We are all so happy for Toots . . . and her mom!

Stayed tuned to hear the winner of the "best markings" contest!  It probably won't be me, Vanna, telling you the results because I'm going to be adopted this week, for sure.  But I'll have someone let you know!  Later!
